This two-part social bench was inspired by Jeppe Hein’s concept of making ‘the act of sitting a conscious endeavor.’ The bench is divided into semi-circular halves to joined together at both ends and create an intimate social space or solely at one end to create an s-shaped seating area that can function as both a social and solitary space. This bench was installed on a lawn behind Stone Row at Bard for students and staff of the organizations in the building’s lower level. I am extremely thankful to this day not only for the help in acquiring materials from the Fund for Visual Learning, which without this project would not have been possible, but also for the introduction to the resources and staff of the Studio Arts program who were all extremely supportive and contributed their physical work and feedback to this project. This is a wonderful program that I am happy to have seen continue and aid other students in their work.
